Kota Kinabalu: A former principal, oil and gas company and higher learning institution were among nine who received awards for their efforts in preserving and improving Sabah's environment during the launch of State and City-level National Environment Day (HASN) 2017, here, Saturday.

The event saw recipients in various categories, such as the special awards and "Kampung Lestar"' (Sustainable Village) award.

One of the recipients, Marie Yong Pik Hua, received a Special Award for her contributions in leading SM St. Michael Penampang and SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin to a more eco-friendly path, as well as her countless achievements in the environmental sector.

Five villages – Kg Jawa Kongsi 10, Kg Kilimu, Kg Suasa, Kg Jawi-Jawi and Kg Sebait - also received the "Kampung Lestari" award for their active participation in the preservation of the environment.

Apart from that, a household e-waste collection competition was also organised by the State Local Government and Housing Ministry.

Local authorities took part in the contest, with the grand prize of RM3,000 won by City Hall.

The awards were presented by State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun, who represented Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman.

Musa, in his speech read by Masidi, acknowledged that Sabah has huge potential to attract tourists with its environmental package, simultaneously boosting the economy.

"Sabah has the full environmental package with its flora and fauna biodiversity, beautiful islands and beaches, lush forests and stunning mountain ranges," he said.

In line with HASN 2017's theme of "Alam Sekitar, Tanggungjawab Bersama", Musa urged everyone to do their part in safeguarding our nature and environment, as it is something that we all share together.

Also present were Department of Environment Sabah Director Tunku Khalkausar Fatahi and Mayor Yeo Boon Hai. - Jegathisan A/L Sivanesan
