Labuan: Famous footballer of the island in the mid-60s, Dilbagh Singh, 68, who hung his boots more than 30 years ago and never dreamt of adding any more feathers to his cap was the surprise recipient of the Labuan "Tokoh Sukan" in conjunction with the National Sports Day held here.Dilbagh's award comprised RM5,000 cash, a certificate and a trophy.

They were presented to him by Member of Parliament, Datuk Rozman Isli.

Thanking the Youth and Sport Department, Rozman and others for the unexpected recognition, he said:

"Sportsmen and women are normally involved in sports due to their intense interest.

However, such awards are important as they are like a bonus and could serve as inspiration to young footballers and others. The message is do well and you may be recognised."

With this honour, Dilbagh stands along with Santokh Singh and Serbegeth Singh as among Sikhs who shone in Malaysian soccer.

Dilbagh was involved in active football for about 10 years from 1966 to 1977.

He played for both Sabah and Labuan in important games and his favourite positions were that of right-back and midfield. In many matches he appeared with Datuk Hassan Sani, Datuk James Wong, Peter Rajah to name a few.

After 1977 he became more involved in football management and sat in the committees for Safa and Lafa.

Later he went on to become Lafa chairman.

The Tokoh Sukan award makes Dilbagh score another 'first" in the family.

His grandfather Bhagat Singh was the "first" immigrant to arrive here from India in 1866 while his father Sardar Gorbux Singh was the first influential Indian businessman on the island and also the first Sikh councillor in the local authority.

Some 7,000 people participated in the National Sports Day celebration and a number of sports-related events were held. - Sohas Das
