Kota Kinabalu: State Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad confirmed the closure of Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M) stores in Sabah, but said it is temporary and nothing to do with the rising prices of goods. She said she heard many complaints regarding the high cost of living, especially when it comes to prices of goods.

She said, however, the closure is just part of the upgrading process of KR1M and advised consumers to practise

3M which is Memilih (to choose), Memboikot (boycott) and Melapor (to report).

"We also wish to remind consumers that the power is with them. Consumers have the power of the three Ms and they should use it wisely."

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin was recently quoted as saying that the temporary closure of KR1M was part of the Ministry's upgrading plan to the KR1M 2.0.

He said further information on the upgrading will be announced soon and it was part of the government's commitment to improve services to the public.

KR1M is a government owned chain of convenience stores in Malaysia established in 2011 aimed at allowing the low income group to obtain cheaper groceries and lightening their burden besides bringing Malaysians closer to the concept of 1Malaysia.

In MIRI, the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) confirmed that one of the Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia operating in Miri City had shut down for economic reason.

KPDNKK Miri branch chief, Joe Azmi Jamil said the KR1M in Tudan was closed down as the operator suffered losses competing with supermarkets and hypermalls in the city.

"Right now, only one KR1M, in Pujut, Miri City is still in operation," he said.

Joe Azmi, however, admitted that the sole operator of KR1M in Miri City was facing similar problems.

The KR1M operation in Sarawak was embroiled in controversy in April last year when there were allegations of abuse of the items being sold at these retail outlets that led to the shortage of supplies.

KR1M was mooted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in June 2011, aimed at reducing the people's burden from the rising cost of living and to assist local small and medium enterprises. - Locksley Ng
