Kota Kinabalu: Two junior swimmers from the State were given valuable tips by world 50m butterfly champion Ben Proud from Britain while attending a two-day clinic hosted by AirAsia at Thanyapura Health and Sport Centre in Thailand recently.Shairul Aiman from Penampang and Amelia Beatrix Chin from Sandakan were among eight swimmers in the country sponsored by AirAsia to attend the programme conducted by Ben and assisted by his Aqua Elite coaches, Anthony James and Matthew Zammit.

Head Coach of Sabah Aquatic Sports Association (SASA), Elvin Chia, who is also Sabah Sports Council's coach was present at the clinic.

He said the clinic was rather exclusive and each of the swimmers was given a personalised gym and dry land session focusing on their individual talent stroke skills.

"The participants have gained insight about professional athletes in this AirAsia Talent Pool Programme.

We are proud that two of our swimmers were selected and the experience they learned hopefully will improve them further.

"It was a chance of a lifetime for them to see a world champion demonstrating a strong dive in the pool.

Apart from that, the swimmers also had dialogue with Ben on preparations and dedication towards a future professional athlete," he said.

Meanwhile, President of SASA, Anthony Kiob thanked AirAsia and Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (ASUM) for giving Sabah swimmers the opportunity to learn from the world champion and his aqua elite coaches. - GL Oh
