The Federal Government has approved RM420 million to widen Jalan Sulaman in Sepanggar and construct four flyovers to ease traffic congestion.Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Rahman Dahlan, when announcing this Saturday, said the road will have three lanes instead of the existing two from Indah Permai to Yayasan Sabah.

The four flyovers would be in Indah Permai, Kampung Rampayan, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and Kingfisher.

"Traffic between Indah Permai to Yayasan Sabah is heavily congested and has caused people to be late to work and so productivity is low.

"So I asked the directors of EPU (Economic Planning Unit) to visit Sepanggar last year to inspect the congestion themselves. They agreed it was quite bad," he said after officiating Sepanggar Umno Division Delegates Meeting.

He thanked the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak for approving the allocation.

He said the contract of the proposed project has been awarded and work is expected to start soon as it does not require much land acquisition.

He said both the widening of the road and the construction of the flyovers would be done concurrently.

Meanwhile, Rahman said plan are underway to construct an elevated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane between Inanam to Kota Kinabalu all the way to the airport. The project would cost RM1 billion for the first phase plus another RM1 billion for the second phase.

"The future structure will be divided into two phases where the first phase will be from Inanam all the way to Kota Kinabalu city and to the airport where the cost of the project is estimated to be RM1 billion and the second phase cost would be the same as the first," he said.

He added that the proposed BRT lane can be converted to a Light Rail Transit (LRT) track when the need arises in the future.

Also present were Sepanggar Umno Division Acting Chief Datuk Yakob Khan and Wanita Chief Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid who is also State Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister. - Jeremy S. Zabala
