Kota Kinabalu: RTM Sabah has notched another achievement with the launching of its own mobile app as well as the release of Kombo RTM Sabah's debut album.Sabah Deputy Broadcasting Director Malinaziah Datu Mohd Julaspi said it is one of the measures taken by RTM Sabah to expand its reach among the public.

"We already have the RTM Mobile app which is more comprehensive but the RTM Sabah app caters specifically for local Sabahan contents," she said at the launching of the mobile app and Kombo RTM Sabah's album by Sabah Broadcasting Director Ali Ngasio at the Communication and Multimedia Ministry Complex, here, Wednesday.

Through the mobile app, Malinaziah said, listeners can tune in to their favourite RTM Sabah radio stations anytime and everywhere.

"RTM Sabah can also expand its programmes as well as deliver messages and government policies to the people.

"The mobile app also functions as a bridge of interaction between Sabahans in the State and other parts of the world where they, too, can obtain the latest information on happenings in Sabah.

"We have wanted to build this app for a long time but due to constraints, we can only materialise it now."

RTM Sabah Information Technology (IT) Unit Coordinator, Lin Wunfu Silas, said the mobile app was built with the help of interns from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).

"The students did their internship in RTM Sabah and their first project was building the mobile app," he said.

Silas said the app aims to make it easier for listeners to access all the radio stations under RTM Sabah.

"It took us three weeks to develop the app. We started from scratch and only referred to the Internet to build it.

"The biggest challenges were to link all the radio stations together and to build the menu for the mobile app."

As for Kombo RTM Sabah's first album, its head, Raimon@Matlan Sukudat, said the instrumental album, aptly titled Pertama, marked another milestone for the combo since its establishment in 1975.

"This is a great achievement for Kombo RTM Sabah as RTM combos in other states have yet to produce such album, except for the one in Angkasapuri," he said.

According to him, all 10 songs in the album were composed and arranged by him and played by the 15 musicians who made up of Kombo RTM Sabah.

"The production process took two years. The songs were recorded in 2015 and everything was completed last year but the launching had to be postponed to this year due to some technical problems.

He disclosed that they have no plans yet to sell the album but if there are any listeners or instrumental fans interested to get the album, they can contact the combo directly through their official Facebook page.

"For the next project, we will try to record local Sabahan folksongs, with vocals.

"We hope our debut album will inspire those who are passionate about music, especially youths, to pursue their dreams," he said. - Ricardo Unto
