Not flowing money...but misery
KINARUT: Residents of Taman Sungai Wang (river of money) here are pointing the finger at a condominium and commercial centre developer nearby for causing the worst flood they have experienced in seven years. Some 130 out of 207 houses were affected when flash floods hit on Monday and residents instantly threw the blame at the developer for causing the area's water retention pond to swell and overflow.

Their spokesman Mohd Nordin Khadis said if the developer concerned had built a proper drainage system for the property instead of sharing the same retention pond, the residential area would not have been badly flooded.

"The developer should have built their own drain to allow water to flow out whenever there's a heavy rain.

But they took the easy way by allowing water from their property to go into the pond in our area," he argued.

Residents, he said, claimed to have suffered losses up to RM20,000 as a result of Monday's flash flood.

He pointed out that since the developer began constructing the property in 2013, the residential area had been flooded "several times" but still never as bad as the latest one.

Taman Sungai Wang has been occupied since 2010.

Mohd Nordin, who is also the area's Rukun Tetangga chairman, said residents also expressed regret with the local authority for approving the condominium and commercial centre project without considering its impact on the community when a flash flood occurs.

He said Monday's flash flood had exposed weaknesses in the district's property development planning.

Residents are calling on the elected representatives to intervene in the matter. - Leonard Alaza
