Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will soon conduct major operations against two State Government agencies. MACC Sabah Director Dato' Sazali Salbi did not elaborate except to say that they will conduct open investigations against these two agencies, including certain high rank officers, within the next few weeks.

The huge amount of allocation found given to these two agencies was basis for them (MACC) to investigate, he said, during a MACC Hari Raya celebration, here, Saturday.

Last year, MACC made a major swoop which led to the biggest seizure in the history of MACC, when they recovered more than RM50 million in cash and items from top officials in the Sabah Water Department.

Three people have been charged in court so far with money laundering.

Sazali said MACC is also monitoring to see if there is any hanky-panky involved in the protest staged by some 40 licensed Sabah tourist guides at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport, early last Saturday against supposed illegal China tour guides.

The 40 guides have been issued show cause letters.

He said the probe was part of efforts to clear any wrong doings that could affect the tourism industry in Sabah that is a major revenue getter in the State.

He said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman had told them that it was important that the tourism industry was free of any bad practices that could affect the smooth entry of tourists.

As of July this year, MACC is investigating 56 cases in the State which mostly dealt with false claims for projects purportedly carried out but not. Thus far, a total of 17 people have been arrested and 17 charged. - Sherell Ann Jeffrey
