Express is honoured at Cyber Security event
Putra Jaya: The Daily Express has been honoured by the Government as a strategic partner in creating the necessary awareness for a more secure and safer cyberspace in Sabah.Presenting the Most Supportive Print (Newspaper) Media 2016 award to the paper on the occasion of CyberSecurity Malaysia's 20th anniversary at the Putrajaya Marriot on Friday, Science, Technology and Innovation Deputy Minister Datuk Wira Dr Abu Bakar Mohd Diah, hoped the media would continue to play its role in educating the public on cyber security measures.

"There is no point in being experts and discussing what measures should have been taken after damage has been done but to anticipate and be well prepared in order to counter it," he said, drawing an analogy to there being no shortage of experts commenting on a landslide after but not before it happened.

Wira said CyberSecurity Malaysia, the national cyber security specialist and technical agency aims to further boost Malaysia's cyber resilience through Information and Communication Technology (ICT) certification for local companies.

He noted that cyber-crime including fraud, hacktivism, online scams, espionage and cyber harassment had been increasing rapidly in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of CyberSecurity Malaysia Dato Dr Amirudin Abdul Wahab said the prevention of cyber-criminal activities is the most critical aspect in the fight against cybercrime.

"CyberSecurity Malaysia will continue to play a more aggressive role in educating the public on cyber security measures and helping curb cyber-criminal activities in Malaysia.

"Through Malaysia Computer Emergency Response (MyCERT) and digital forensics departments, we are ready to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure a more secure and safer cyberspace for all," he said.

According to the latest statistics released by the CyberSecurity Malaysia, a total of 3,928 cybercrime incidences were reported between January and June this year.

Last year alone, CyberSecurity Malaysia received 8,334 reports related to cyber security.

Between 2012 and 2016, CyberSecurity Malaysia received a total of 50,789 cyber security incidents.

Of the figure, fraud contributes to almost 40 per cent or 20,141 followed by hacktivism (9,918), spam (9,210) and cyber threats (2,333).

More than 70 per cent of the incidents reported involved financial implications, including phishing, online banking fraud, card credit fraud and online scam among others.

Royal Malaysian Police statistics recorded abuse of RM1.9 million through phishing method done by cyber criminals through 113 cases recorded.
