Kota Kinabalu: The 10th Buvazoi Tavantang - Mr Kaamatan (MrK) male pageant saw a record number of participants – equalling its counterpart the Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan for females this year.State-level MrK organising chairman Casey Jovial said the annual competition has witnessed a significant improvement over previous editions.

"Among the improvement were the selection format and the number of participants having increased to 45 from 35.

"These improvements need to be done as this is the 10th year it is held," he said during the registration of MrK contestants, here, Saturday.

He hoped to enhance the quality of the competition so as to elevate its status.

"I would like to see the State-level competition to be conducted more systematically," he said without elaborating.

Apart from the central selection, participants were also chosen through district-level competitions such as Keningau, Kudat, Beluran, Kota Kinabalu and Klang Valley.

"The central selection was held to choose representatives for districts which did not organise their own competition.

"We hope, for the next edition, each district will organise their own MrK competition to choose representatives for the State-level pageant," he said, adding the judging for this year will put emphasis on height and the ability to converse in Kadazandusun.

Casey disclosed MrK shares the mission and vision of the Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan pageant – to promote the uniqueness of the culture, custom and traditional costumes of the Kadazandusun community.

"And now, it has been a tradition for the winner of Mr Kaamatan to escort the appearance of Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan during the State-level finals each year.

"This year's MrK is also supported and observed by the State-level Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan organising committee."

Also present during the registration were MrK founders and advisers Walter Misir and Martin Buguk.

The finals for the State-level MrK will be held Narada Hotel, Putatan, on Aug 13.

The top prize winner will walk away with prizes worth RM15,555, including a trophy. - Ricardo Unto
