Labuan: There are still no rabies cases on the island and the restrictions on the entry of animals, especially from Sarawak, are still in place, said Labuan Veterinary Services Director Dr Elizabeth Edward Juan. She said this when launching the department's roadshow on the Animal Welfare Act 2015 (Act 772).

The programme aimed to provide information on the Act and licensing requirements for animal-handling activities to stakeholders in Labuan comprising pet owners, pet shop owners, animal welfare associations and others.

"With this Act, penalties for mistreatment and tyranny of animals will incur fines ranging from RM20,000 to RM100,000, three years' jail or both, if convicted. Previous penalties under the Animals Act 1953 (Revised 2006) were RM200 fine, six months' jail or both" said Dr Elizabeth.

Dr Marysia James Abie, Head of Labuan's Veterinary Health Division, said the Act was intended to produce more responsible pet owners.

"Most cases of stray dogs and cats roaming around are due to irresponsible pet owners abandoning unwanted pets out in the open" said Dr Marysia. - Iffah Dilaney
