Woman charged with hiring illegal Filipina

Kota Kinabalu: A local woman was on Thursday charged with hiring a paperless Filipina.Lovintih @ Betty Balantai pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court Judge Noorhafizah Mohd Salim to the charge against her.

Lovintih is accused of employing the 19-year-old Filipina at the Sweet Sensation outlet in Jesselton Point, here on Feb 25, 2016.

The offence under Section 55B(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 provides for a fine of between RM10,000 and RM50,000 or up to a year's jail, or both, on conviction.

Noorhafizah set Aug 16 this year for case management and released Lovintih on a bail of RM3,000 in a local surety.

Prosecuting Officer Joachim Abel Majain from the Immigration Department appeared for the prosecution while Lovintih was not represented.

In another case, the court fixed Aug 14 to rule whether a man charged with robbing another man of RM7,000 has a case to answer.

The court set the date for Mahathir Habir when the prosecution closed its case after calling five witnesses.

Mahathir is accused of robbing one Wang Yun of the money at the Keluarga Rainfield entertainment outlet in Penampang on Feb 10 this year.

He allegedly used a knife and a machete while committing the offence together with four accomplices still at large.

Mahathir was charged under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping, on conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Dinesh Raja conducted the prosecution while counsel Hamid Ismail defended Mahathir. – Cynthia D Baga
