Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) claims Forestry Department officers are "harassing" farmers over firearms rather than focusing on illegal logging. Its Sabah Youth Chief Raymond Ahuar in a statement said he received a complaint from a farmer, Ngosoi Pengawot, on June 20, over alleged harassment by a group of Forestry Department officers, adding a report was lodged.

Ngosoi was said to be driving through the Tibow checking station from Kalabakan towards Nabawan when the incident happened.

"The farmer who was with his 15-year-old son, was ordered to stop, I was devastated when told that one of the officers pointed his gun towards Ngosoi and ordered him to open his car bonnet and boot.

"The officers started searching his vehicle and was given a notice for the wild boar carcass and several other items found in the car boot.

"Ngosoi lodged a report at the Kalabakan Police Station," he said.

Raymond said it should be highlighted that with a hunting licence, wild boar hunting is permitted in unprotected forests in Sabah, and wild boar meat is known to be widely consumed among Sabahans.

He stressed that the officers had no basis to seize Ngosoi's property as the officers did not have any basis or proof that the wild boar was hunted at a protected forest.

Raymond claimed that there are lorries of logs being transported out of these areas and the officers should focus on looking for any illegal logging instead of harassing a harmless civilian with a gun.
