Found – 14 who went missing
Kota Kinabatangan: Fourteen villagers from Kg Paris Satu, aged between 20 and 58, who were reported missing in the Ulu Segama Forest Reserve in Lahad Datu last Wednesday and Friday, were found exhausted but safe on Tuesday (pic). District Police Chief Supt A. Sahak Rahmat said the first group comprising five people, was found at the Ladang Balat at about 10.15am.

The second group, comprising nine people, was found at about 1.20pm in the Forest Reserve grounds located about 10km from the Guard Post.

A total of 80 officers and personnel from the police, Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Department, Forestry Department, villagers and family members of the missing took part in the search and rescue operation.

Sahak said police were alerted on June 25 about the five villagers from Kg Paris 1 who went missing after they went to the Bilong River in the forest reserve to fish at about 2.30pm on June 23.

"Their failure to return home prompted nine villagers from the same village to enter the forest in search of them," he said.

However, the nine also went missing, prompting a search and rescue operation for all 14 villagers.

"Two vehicles, a D-Max and a Mitsubishi Triton were also found at the Ulu Segama Forest Reserve outskirts," he added.

He said the search focused on the area where the 14 villagers were believed to have entered the forest, covering a 2.2km radius.

"Traces of plastic food packets and empty cigarette boxes were found at the site where the victims were initially believed to have taken their rest.

The operation was held from 5pm on Monday and resumed at 8am on Tuesday. - Mardinah Jikur
