Kota Kinabalu: It was a good international exposure for three Sabah soft tennis junior players in the recent 16th China Cup tournament held in Tai Zhou City in ZheJiang Province, China from June 18-26.Team manager cum head coach KK Chin said the trio of Brandon Lim Zhi Hong, Ethan Wong Yap Chun and Jassel Doong Jo Xern put up a good show despite failing to make it past the preliminary rounds in the team and individual events.

"Our players had the first hand experience of what international standards are like.

The tournament was played in round robin format and the involvement of many matches gave the players very good exposure and this will do them good in future outings."

In the team event, the State representative lost all their group matches against Korea Team C, Taizhou University and India while in the individual events, two players managed to win their matches.

"The standard of the tournament was very high and Asean countries who are new to the sport were not expected to make any impact in the competition.

"Our main target was for our players to gain experience and I was very pleased with their performance in the singles events.

"Jassel Doong and Brandon Lim managed to win two out of four matches in the group stages, which were remarkable feats as it was the first time that our players managed to secure a win in the competition while Ethan Wong also played well despite losing all his matches."

He added that South Korean officials were impressed with the Sabah players and had invited Sabah Soft Tennis Association to take part in the inaugural Korea Soft Tennis Cup to be held in Anseong, South Korea from August 22 to 29.

"Our boys' good performance also caught the eyes of the South Korean officials.

They reckoned that we need to give more international exposure to our players, and had extended their invitation to us to participate in the first Korea Soft Tennis Cup in August where full hospitalities will be provided and we only need to buy our own flight tickets." - GL Oh
