Security beef-up against sneaking in of militants
Kota Kinabalu: Police will be beefing up security measures in Sabah waters during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration following "unhealthy" developments in the ongoing conflict in Marawi City, Philippines.Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Ramli Din said the police force are ready to face any possibilities and will not take lightly any information pertaining to the scenario in the neighbouring country.

So far, he said, there are still threats that certain quarters may attempt to sneak into the country's waters, especially in the East Coast of Sabah, due to the conflicts in the Philippines.

"We will be enhancing security control in Sabah waters and we have reminded our frontline security forces to be more vigilant and take extra cautions due to the current happenings in the neighbouring country.

"In fact, our strength in terms of security manpower is sufficient, including during the coming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration," he said.

Ramli said this to reporters after launching the "Op Selamat" 11/2017 and breaking fast with the City Police at Likas Bay Park, here, Thursday.

He also distributed meals sponsored by Kumpulan BTC Berhad to some 150 police personnel from the traffic unit, mobile patrol vehicle, Amanita, motorcycle patrol unit and cycling patrol team who also took part in the programme.

Also present were State Police Deputy Commissioner Datuk Razaruddin Husain, City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra, Kumpulan BTC Berhad Managing Director Datuk Abdul Kadir M. E. Sikkandar, City Hall enforcement chief Ernest Mojikon and other senior police officers.

On Op Selamat, Ramli said police would give emphasis to road safety and patrolling residential areas when people leave their houses to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri in their own hometown.

"They need to fill up forms to notify the nearest police station that they are leaving their homes unoccupied for the festive holidays and request police patrol.

"So far, we have received encouraging response from people who wish to return to their hometown for the Hari Raya celebration and we noticed since last year that those occupants who filled the forms did not get their houses broken into and that there were no theft incidents," he said. - Hayati Dzulkifli
