AirAsia commences first flight from JB to Kuala Terengganu

Terengganu: AirAsia, the world's best low-cost airline today commenced its first flight from Johor Bahru to Kuala Terengganu. The new route will operate with 3 times weekly direct flights, and this also marks Johor Bahru's ninth domestic route and Kuala Terengganu's second domestic route after Kuala Lumpur.

The inaugural flight departed from Senai International Airport at 1345hrs and was sent off by Mr. Mohd Shukri bin Mohd Masbah, Director, Johor State Tourism Department and Mr. Md Derick Basir, Chief Executive Officer of Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn. Bhd. The receiving ceremony was held at Sultan Mahmud Airport in Kuala Terengganu with a special water salute and flight AK 6162 was celebrated and welcomed by YAB Dato' Seri Haji Ahmad Razif bin Abd. Rahman, Chief Minister of Terengganu State.

Guests onboard the maiden flight included YB Dato' Haji Mohd Zubir Bin Embong, Speaker, Terengganu State Legislative Assembly, YM Tun Ahmad Faisal bin Tun Abdul Razak, Director, Terengganu State Tourism Department and Aireen Omar, Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia Berhad, as well as members of the media.

Aireen Omar, Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia Berhad said, "We are pleased to be able to connect more unique direct routes such as Johor Bahru and Kuala Terengganu. We are also committed on introducing more routes and provide better connectivity to our guests. In 2016, AirAsia has flown more than 420,000 guests in and out of Terengganu, and we are poised to grow this number even further – in line with Terengganu state government's aim of increasing tourist arrivals this year."

"We also look forward to grow our southern hub in Johor Bahru and connect it to more destinations in the future.

Besides Kuala Terengganu, AirAsia also flies to eight other domestic routes from Johor Bahru such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi, Kuching, Miri, Tawau, Sibu, and Kota Kinabalu, as well as five international routes; Bangkok, Guangzhou, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, and Surabaya," she added.

YAB Dato' Seri Haji Ahmad Razif bin Abd. Rahman, Chief Minister of Terengganu State commented, "Terengganu is gearing up to be known as a tourism state with efficient land and air accessibility, with good services, modern infrastructures and treasures of nature, culture and heritage. The additional Johor Bahru to Kuala Terengganu direct flights will definitely boost the arrival of tourists from southern region into Terengganu.

Mr. Md Derick Basir, Chief Executive Officer of Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn. Bhd. said, "Senai Airport welcomes the introduction of Kuala Terengganu routes by AirAsia right before the Hari Raya celebration.

The connectivity is very important as it offers convenient access and should encourage tourism and economic activities between the Southern and East Coast region.

We have been working closely with AirAsia to add more route choices from Senai Airport for the Southern community. 2017 has so far seen a remarkable progress with the introduction of Langkawi and Kuala Terengganu, and the recommencement of Jakarta and Tawau.
