Kota Marudu: A four-year-old boy is recovering from gunshot wounds. Police said the father accidentally shot the boy with a bakakuk, a type of homemade firearm generally used in Sabah to hunt animals.

The incident happened at 3.30pm Thursday in Kampung Muhang near here.

The boy, identified as Frendly Jukiring, is currently being warded at the Likas Children and Women Hospital in Kota Kinabalu.

He sustained injuries to his left chest, shoulder and right cheek, according to New Straits Times.

District police chief Superintendant Izaan Abdullah said the boy was playing outside the house when he was hit by the bullets from the homemade pistol.

He said police were still checking what was the boy's father doing with the pistol at the time of the incident and how it went off.

"After the incident, the boy's mother rushed him to the district hospital before he was immediately transferred to the hospital in Kota Kinabalu for further treatment.

"We have also detained the father at 9.30pm yesterday to facilitate investigation. However, no firearm was found during the arrest." he said.

Izaan said the case was being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons and Section 8 (a) of the Arms Act 1960 for carrying arms and ammunition without a licence or permit.
