Man jailed for stealing from Surau

Kota Kinabalu: A 27-year-old man who stole from a surau in a shopping complex here was sentenced to 12 months' jail on Thursday.Mohd Syahmi Saripuddin admitted to stealing a bag containing a handphone and a watch belonging to one Shrull Nizzam Mohd Diah at 6.45pm on April 11 at the surau in the Imago mall.Inspector Rasydan Jasni, prosecuting, told Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun that Shrull noticed that his bag placed on a side in the surau was missing after he finished his prayers.

A check with the CCTV recording at the mall showed his bag being carried out by an unknown man from the premises. A man, identified as Syahmi, was later detained by security guards of Imago on May 21 based on Shrull's identification.The watch and a pawn receipt for the handphone were also recovered from Syahmi.Pleading for leniency, Syahmi told the court that desperation drove him to it following two years without a proper job after graduating in engineering from a local university, and that he had to do many different work just to earn a living.Syahmi was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 10 years on conviction.

In another case, a 38-year-old businesswoman claimed trial to forgery.Saudah Sarzaman is accused of forging the signature of one Ag Fauzi Ahmad, 41, on the transfer of share documents and Borang 32A in a company at Likas Plaza, here, at 11am on Nov 16, 2016.
