Manggatal, Telipok hit by water woes
Kota Kinabalu: Water supply in many Manggatal and Telipok areas was disrupted for more than 48 hours after a landslide hit a 700mm transmission pipe near Taman Putera Jaya in Telipok, around 5pm, last Saturday (May 20). The affected main pipe, which receives supply from the Telibong water treatment plant in Tamparuli, distributes water to end users along the old Tuaran Road until Manggatal town and also Tuaran Bypass.

Daily Express on Monday received numerous complaints from affected consumers who voiced dissatisfaction about the prolonged dry taps in their respective homes.

One parent said a primary school in Telipok cancelled its afternoon classes due to the acute water shortage in the school.

"Pipe repair work could not be carried out on the spot due to safety concerns as the landslide had caused several electricity poles near the site to tilt severely.

"We were told the Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) could only carry out relocation of the affected poles on the following day and they worked the whole day on that particular Sunday (May 21)," a Water Department spokeswoman said.

"However, SESB workers had to stop work when heavy rain that afternoon flooded their working area.

The work resumed the next morning (May 22) and hopefully everything will be settled by today," she told Daily Express Monday morning.

She said the repair work was expected to be completed in 48 hours.

"Once the pipe is repaired, water will be channelled to consumers," she said, adding that the supply is expected to return to normal within 72 hours.

Among the affected areas are throughout the old Tuaran Road until Kampung Darau, including Manggatal town, Bandar Sierra, Taman Telipok Ria, Taman Putera Jaya, Taman Putera Perdana, Taman Flamingo, UUC, Taman Indah Permai, Jalan Kokol, Jalan Keliangau, Kampung Pulutan, Taman Richdar, Kampung Tebobon, Kampung Rampayan, Kampung Gudon and nearby areas.

She said metered consumers in the affected areas can contact the Department's office at 088-711767 to request for water tanker services.

"We regret the inconvenience caused to them during the span of the problem," she added.

Meanwhile, PKR's Inanam Assemblyman Dr Roland Chia called on the Water Department immediately rectify the damaged main pipe.

He said repair works must be carried out round the clock to ensure water supply will resume as soon as possible to thousands of affected consumers.

"I received many complaints from my constituents about having no water for bathing, cleaning, cooking and even to flush their toilets which caused so much inconvenience," he said. - Oliver Voon
