The KD Perdana was on a routine patrol, sailing in waters off Tanjung Sedili, when they spotted foreign fishing vessels suspected of carrying out illegal activities in Malaysian waters. A boarding team boat, carrying the nine sailors, was launched from the KD Perdana to check on the vessels. However, both vessels eventually lost communication with each other, which spurred a search mission.
