Kota Kinabalu: Rahman Shah Marajeh scored a stunning free-kick to earn the Sabah President Cup squad a 2-2 draw with Pahang at the Likas Stadium on Thursday.

The striker was recalled by coach Justin Ganai to beef up the misfiring front lines for the match and it was duly rewarded with his strike that also saved the team's blushes in front of the home fans.

Sabah dominated the play from the start but it was the visitors that opened the scoring first with Nizam Fikri Mohd Nasir's easy tap in resulting from a corner kick in the 13th minute.

Pahang then added a second in the 30th minute, and again the defence failed to make the proper marking allowing Nik Muhd Sharif Haseefy Mohd Lazim to shoot past Sabah custodian Tekson Tubeng from the edge of the box.

The dangerous Rahman could have scored two early goals in the opening half but found his shots denied by the post and the crossbar.

The first from close range hit the upright while the second curling attempt rebounded off the crossbar but the on rushing Stanley Sulong missed the sitter completely.

Under-19 left back Jeniun Karib who was also making his first start for the team contributed a lot for the much improved side. It was his well taken corner kick deep into injury time in the first half that created havoc in the box allowing Stanley to redeem himself for the early miss with a well taken first goal for his team from close range.

The second half again saw Sabah creating a lot of chances but they were unable to find the net until Rahman stepped up in the 76th minute to take the free-kick just outside the box that hit the crossbar and went in.

With the draw, Sabah remained in ninth place with nine points from two wins, three draws and eight losses.

Their next match is on Monday (May 22) away against Selangor at the Stadium Mini MP Sepang, Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi. - GL Oh
