Kota Kinabalu: The State Government has been urged to reduce the water tariff immediately by reviewing contracts given to three private companies for an annual sum of RM263.8 million.Making the call, Parti Warisan Sabah Vice President Junz Wong said he has basis to believe that the tariff increment was done in October 2014 that was due to privatisation of some of these water concessionaire contracts. He said the three private companies are Jetama Sdn Bhd, Timatch Sdn Bhd and Lahad Datu Water Supply Sdn Bhd, which were appointed by the State Government to build, operate, transfer, treat and supply clean water to the public in Sabah every year.

This information was provided in a written reply to Junz's question in the recently-concluded State Legislative Assembly sitting.Junz, who is also Likas Assemblyman, wanted the Sabah Government to come clean as to when the contracts were awarded and for how long were these contracts awarded. "With the earlier exposure of RM122 million private contracts awarded to seven companies, now another RM263.8 million for three companies, it is clear that a public fund of a staggering RM385.8 million is used to build, operate, transfer, treat and supply water to public every year. "There must be full transparency and accountability as far as these private contracts are concerned," he said in a statement, Thursday.

Junz said Warisan stressed that the Government must have the social responsibility to ensure that utility services (water and electricity) are not over-charged and provided with good quality services to our people. He said this means that the Sabah Government must have the political will to ensure profiteering by these utility businesses must never be the objective.
