Kota Kinabalu: Remedial work on the caved-in road at Taman Suria, Penampang has been finally completed after concerns over the damaged structure was highlighted in 2013. Remedial work started mid last year and valued at RM11 million, with around 70 per cent of the cost, which had gone towards repairing the parking space, roads and slope borne by the Local Government and Housing Ministry. This would not have been possible if it had not been for MCA Penampang Chief Datuk Francis Goh's meeting with the Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor, last year. ADVERTISEMENT "When I met with the Minister (Hajiji), he immediately approved a flash fund of RM7.5 million for the repair work," he told reporters during a visit to the newly-constructed road area. The monies were then channelled to the District Council to allow for the repair works to be tendered out to contractors thereafter. Also present was Penampang District Officer Luvita Koisun. The caved-in structure posed a risk to residents and shop owners in two blocks of the residential and shophouse apartments and fears had been raised that it may collapse further if no action were to be taken. According to Goh, he had also met with the developer, Sinar Pembangunan Sdn Bhd, and that they were kind enough to assist with the repairs. "The developer, who is also a member of Shareda, also forked out their own money to fix the underpinning piles to stop the soil underneath the blocks from eroding and strengthened the structure of the two blocks," said Goh, adding that Sinar Pembangunan had spent over RM3 million for the engineering works. - Jason Santos
