Tawau public foil attempt by duo to steal vehicle

Tawau: Two men's attempt to steal a double cab was foiled by the public who cordoned off the area, resulting in the vehicle plunging into a gaping hole, at the Viramek old factory area at Mile 4, Jalan Apas, Wednesday. The unemployed duo, aged 27 and 48, one of them a foreigner, sustained injuries after civilians threw stones at them. District Police Chief ACP Fadil Marsus said both men were from Kampung Kurnia Jaya, Jalan Apas, adding that the younger man was convicted for car theft in 2010 and car break-in in 2012.

"Our team apprehended the two with assistance from the public…both sustained injuries after they turned aggressive and tried to flee prompting civilians to hurl stones at them," he said.The situation was brought under control when the team arrived at the scene and the duo were handed over to them at 8.30am. The two men are now remanded until Thursday (April 27) for further investigations under Section 379 A of the Penal Code for stealing. Fadil said the incident took place after a 30-year-old Petronas supervisor from Labuan ended up with his Isuzu car being stolen when he stopped to buy food from a roadside stall at Taman Megah Jaya about 7.30am that day.

"The man left his car unattended with the engine still running, only to return to find it being driven away by strangers," he said. "About 8am, our patrol team rushed to the scene after receiving information of the stolen vehicle being driven along Mile 5, Jalan Apas. "The car thieves, however, fled towards Kampung Hidayat, prompting the patrol team to give chase," he added.

He said the team lost sight of the thieves who drove into an alley in the village, adding that the team's pursuit was hampered due to the road condition which was not suitable for light vehicles. Civilians who saw the incident stepped in to assist and apprehended the culprits by surrounding them. - Lagatah Toyos
