Lorry driver killed, duo seriously injured in Beluran mishap

Beluran: A lorry driver was killed and his two passengers seriously injured when the vehicle crashed at Km 76.9 along Jalan Nangoh/Paitan in the Bukit Ular area here, on Thursday.

Beluran Police Chief Supt Shivanathan Velautham identified the local man from Kampung Sentosa Jaya, Mile 3, Sandakan as Ahmad Nongkang @ Mado, 59.

Shivanathan said the lorry driver was believed to have lost control of the lorry which skidded and crashed while negotiating a downhill stretch at about 7.30am.

Initial findings showed that the lorry was transporting fertilisers to the IOI Pamol Sugut estate and was heading towards Paitan from the Nangoh direction when the mishap occurred.

The driver who was trapped was helped out of the lorry by four firefighters led by an officer using special equipment.

The man however was pronounced dead by ambulance paramedics at the scene.

Meanwhile, Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station deployed six personnel led by Rosemidian Majid to the scene located some 151 kilometres away following a distress call at about 7.15am.

The man's two seriously injured passengers were already rushed to the hospital by civilians by the time the team arrived.

Also at the scene to assist were policemen from Sungai-Sungai and Tagas-Tagas, as well as ambulance paramedics from Nangoh Clinic. - Mardinah Jikur
