Tungku YB Suhaili dies of liver cancer aged 56

Kota Kinabalu: Tungku Assemblyman Datuk Mohd Suhaili Said (pic) died at a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur Friday. He was 56.He breathed his last at about 3.10pm, according to Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister's department Datuk Arifin Arif.ADVERTISEMENT "I was told by his brother Muhamad Ghazali Said that Allahyarham YB Datuk Suhaili Said passed away just now. Our prayers and condolences go out to him," Arifin said in a Facebook post.It was learnt that Suhaili's wife Datin Dayang Sofia Datu Jamiuddin was by his side when he died, believed of liver cancer.He was believed to have been suffering from liver problems for a while now and was admitted to the hospital three days ago.ADVERTISEMENT His body will be flown back to Tungku, Lahad Datu as soon as possible for burial at the Kampung Remang Muslim burial grounds.Suhaili was also chairman of the Sabah Islamic Religious Council.

The Tungku seat will likely remain vacant until the next state election, which is due to be called by June next year, the same time as the 14th general elections.Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman extended his condolences to the family of Mohd Suhaili Said.Musa, who is also Sabah Umno liaison chief, said Suhaili was a dedicated leader and that his sudden death was a great loss to state."On behalf of the state government of Sabah Umno and Barisan Nasional as well as my family, I would like to express my condolences to the family."We are saddened by the death of a comrade, who had been very committed and dedicated in carrying out tasks entrusted to him, either in the party or the government," he said in a statement.Musa joined several Umno division leaders in performing Tahlil prayers for the late Suhaili, who was also Umno Silam deputy chief and Sabah Religious Council chairman.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

Meanwhile, 13 elected representatives have died since the last general election in May 2013.Of the 13, five of them were Members of Parliament (MP) while the other eight were state assemblymen.
