Kuching: Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) has signed a long-term service agreement with General Electric's Power Services (GE) for the operations and maintenance support of Tanjung Kidurong power station in Bintulu. In a statement Friday, SEB said, the eight-year contract was anticipated to result in increased plant reliability and performance, enabling large-scale energy conservation and reducing maintenance costs.

"In SEB, we are constantly looking into ways to optimise the performance of our power plants by making use of improved technology and innovation wherever possible, it said.

SEB Group Chief Executive Officer, Sharbini Suhaili, said GE's expertise will enhance the power station's operational performance, making it more efficient and reliable in terms of its output.

"Under the agreement, GE will provide training for operations and maintenance personnel, technical support and major spare parts for the plant," he said.

He said the deal will also include offering predictivity solutions for power generation assets from GE's Monitoring and Diagnostics (M&D) Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

"GE is also assisting us in terms of knowledge transfer to build up the competency of our plant operations team," he said.

Meanwhile, GE General Manager-Asia Pacific, Anders Maltesen, said the company's total plant solution included a computerised maintenance system (CMMS), personnel training and remote monitoring and diagnostics.

"By using the M&D centre's predictive capabilities, SEB will be able to utilise real-time data collection for enhanced decision-making," he said.

The power station could potentially reduce its maintenance costs by up to 30 per cent, he said.

Maltesen said the CMMS' early warning system could help prevent mechanism failure, thus increasing the plant's reliability and performance.

About 75 per cent of Sarawak's current power are derived from hydropower plants Murum, Bakun and Batang Ai. – Bernama
