Kota Kinabalu: A 19-year-old airport cargo handler who molested a Korean student was ordered to perform 240 hours of community service.Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus made the order on Hairol Fitri Syazwi Hafizulairie after he pleaded guilty to the charge against him on Thursday.

The court also ordered Hairol to report to the nearest police station once a month for two years.

He molested the 24-year-old student at 8.15pm on Sept 28, 2016 at a women's toilet at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport, here.

During mitigation, counsel Datuk Maijol Mahap, who represented Hairol, asked for either a bond of good behaviour or community service to be given to his client, saying he is a young offender and that it was his first offence.

Maijol added that Hairol had regretted his offence and promised to not repeat the mistake or commit any offence.

Hairol's social report, which was tendered in court by the Welfare Department officer, also recommended that Hairol be not put in prison and suggested he do community service.

Prosecuting Officer Inspector James Paran urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence.

The court heard that the victim, who was doing her internship at the State since June 2015, went to the toilet that day when a man came out from the toilet, hugged her, fondled her breasts and also put his hand into the victim's pants.

A scuffle took place during which the victim managed to escape from the man later identified as Hairol.

She also managed to grab Hairol's name tag and lodged a police report thereafter.

In the same court, a Filipino, who has a previous conviction for taking syabu, was sentenced to 22 months' jail for stealing a headlamp.

Azmie Saudin admitted to stealing the lamp at 7pm on Feb 4 this year at the CKS supermarket in Donggongon, Penampang.

After serving his jail sentence, Azmie was ordered referred to the Immigration Department. - Cynthia D Baga
