BNM to facilitate more bank mergers

Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) is ready to facilitate bank mergers if proposals come about, says Governor Datuk Muhammad Ibrahim.There are a total of 27 banks in Malaysia, of which eight are local banks. However, he said BNM had learned over the years that it was not the number of banks that was really the issue but the quality of services provided and whether they are able to fulfill the needs of the economy, he added.
