Kota Kinabalu: Eagles Rugby Club (ERC) brushed aside KK Sharks 94-7 with a dominant display in the final match of the 2017 AirAsia Malaysia Rugby League East Malaysia Division Premier Cup competition played at the Sukma field, Saturday. The champion who had earlier beat OSCA Warriors 38-5 in the opening game on Tuesday showed their supremacy as they took a 33-7 lead in the first half, and they turned on another gear in the second half with 61 more points to book their place to play against the champion of the MRL Premier Division on April 15 in Kuala Lumpur.

KK Sharks came second in the three-team competition after their 16-12 win over OSCA Warriors in the second game played on Thursday.

The East Malaysia Division Premier Cup organised by Sabah Rugby Union (SRU) was supposed to be a four-team event, but Sibu Division Rugby Union had to pull out in the eleventh hour.

SRU Deputy President Dr KH Tan had earlier said they were supposed to compete in the 2017 AirAsia Malaysia Rugby League Premier Division in the Peninsula.

However, the high cost of playing every week in the peninsula made it impossible for the east Malaysian sides.

He added that the league was also used to unearth new talents that can be groomed for the future with the presence of their technical director of coaching Bradley Moni Mika.

Meanwhile the closing ceremony was attended by Sabah Sports Board Chairman Datuk Louis Rampas who also presented the prizes to the winners. - GL Oh
