Kota Kinabalu: DAMAGE to the electricity meter and control panel servicing several streetlights along the Lido- Kota Kinabalu International Airport Bypass has left one section of the stretch without illumination for close to a fortnight.A Penampang District Council spokesman said its staff observed that the meter and the panel appeared to have been knocked by a passing vehicle.

"We have reported this to the Police and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd," he said.

"In the meantime, the Council is deliberating over how best to remedy this situation."

The spokesman said he would follow up on this matter to ensure that the lights were restored as soon as possible.

DARREN of Penampang said the lights between the junction to the CyberCity area and traffic light intersection near the Kota Kinabalu International Airport had been out of order for some time.

"This poses a safety hazard to motorists, especially during a downpour," he said.

"It is virtually impossible to make out the traffic demarcations on the road when driving in the rain at night."

He said he had reported these problems to local authorities previously.

"Despite my complaint, so far, the lights are still not functioning."

Meanwhile, the contractor maintaining the streetlights along the road leading up to Shan Tung Hill from Jalan Kolam has been instructed to keep an eye on these facilities, after they broke down three times over the past few months.

A City Hall spokesman said, in the latest incident, several components inside the control panel for the lights around the first bend in the road, as one went up the hill, were found to have burned out.

"We suspect that the panel might have been struck by lightning," he said.

"The earlier breakdowns were caused by damage to the bulbs and a power surge."

He said, in each case, the lights were restored after the necessary repairs had been made.

"Nevertheless, in light of the recurring disruption of these facilities, the contractor has been asked to step up efforts to monitor the lights."

The spokesman also urged rate-payers living along this section of the stretch to alert the agency directly about any irregularities involving the lights, so that action could be taken to deal with these problems as soon as possible.

JUSTIN of Luyang said the unlit road was hazardous to drivers as there were bends in the road which was situated on a steep slope.

"I was almost involved in an accident while going home one night as the driver in front of me suddenly slowed down to swerve around tree which had fallen across the road," she said.

"He had no way of knowing that the pole lay in his path as the road was pitch black."

He claimed that the sound of vehicles screeching to a halt could be heard from his house located off the stretch.

"I hope the relevant parties will look into having the streetlights reactivated before an accident happens and anyone comes to harm." (SS)
