Tenom: The Federal Government has always defended the rights of Sabah and Sarawak since the formation of the federation in 1963.Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak (pic) said none of the rights of the people in both states were or will be diminished, including rights on religion, custom and culture as it was stated in the Federal Constitution that every citizen is free to practise their own religion and culture."Should any discrimination occur due to race and religion, it should be reported immediately so action can be taken," he said during the Dragon, Lion and Unicorn Dance Festival at Sri Antenom Hall, near here, on Friday.ADVERTISEMENT Towards this end, he urged local communities to preserve the mutual respect among ethnic groups in the State."Such practice is not new in Sabah and the tradition should be strengthened where other ethnic groups are also involved to celebrate other groups' festivities like Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Christmas and Kaamatan Festival."As such, there is no problem for me to approve the allocation of RM30,000 to beautify the town as well as to repair and install lights in conjunction with Chinese New Year celebration this year."Meanwhile, on the complaints by Internet users here, Salleh said he had notified the district office and Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission officer to identify the total needs of Tenom and Kemabong so that a sufficient allocation can be provided to improve Internet access.ADVERTISEMENT "The government had set a target of more than 90 per cent Internet penetration in the country by 2020 and a 55 per cent speed rate… in two years' time we expect to double the speed at half the price as we put focus on coverage, speed and low price," he said.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
