Kota Kinabalu: MCA Penampang Chairman Datuk Francis Goh said he was the only potential MCA candidate at present for the Kapayan seat. Goh said in the past and all this while MCA has said there was only one potential candidate which was himself.

"We have no other rival i.e. other prominent leaders from our MCA division or party eyeing this seat as well."

He said this when asked whether he was announcing that he was the candidate (for the Kepayan Seat) in the coming general election.

When asked if he felt MCA will be allocated to contest in Kepayan, Goh said if they (BN leadership) felt there are better candidates than him, he would not mind but felt that for this election one should also look at the particular candidate's quality as well, where it's not just about the political party or Barisan Nasional.

"A quality leadership is very important and of course the candidate must be a winnable candidate."

He said Penampang MCA is working very hard to go down to the ground since three years ago and the division is ever ready to face the election at any time.

He said this when met by reporters after the MCA Penampang Chinese New Year walkabout in Lido on Saturday.

On the event itself, Goh said it was an annual event (for MCA Penampang) since three years ago, where they have given out Chinese New Year greetings, angpow and mandarin oranges representing prosperity, longevity and wellness to the traders in the area.

On whether he had received any complaints from traders in the Lido area, Goh said he had managed to solve several issues affecting shop owners in the area, including the exposed rubbish bins problem where a RM50,000 shuttered rubbish collection structure was constructed to minimise the smell.

"Another of our contributions is a safety handrail which was constructed along the Lido drains and we have asked the relevant authorities also to look into the many potholes problem surrounding the Lido market area."

Goh said since taking over the baton of the MCA leadership in Penampang three years ago, the division had paid special attention to social welfare and also development of the various villages in the area.

"For MCA every year we have our 'turun padang' programme for the local communities in the district.

For example, this Chinese New Year our programme is extended to 10 villages in the district to bring in the lion dances, for example, to cherish together with the KDM community and to give away angpows to the older folk and also angpows to the children. All this together with singing and lion dances in our programmes."

He said in addition to the celebration in the 10 villages in the district, they will also have Chinese New Year gatherings at the Kepayan Low Cost housing and Donggongon, Towering, Lido and Beverly Hills.

"This is evidence how MCA pays special attention to the KDM community (in the State).

"We also focus on three very important Chinese concentration areas such as Donggongon, Taman Kobusak and Beverly Hills. So for these three areas with primarily Chinese residents, we will have bigger and special New Year celebrations."

He said in Donggongon it will be held on the 16th day of Chinese New Year after Chap Goh Mei at Buhavan Square and it is being co-organised with the Donggongon Urban Development Committee (JKDB) and also the Penampang Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

On the State MCA Chinese New Year open house, Goh said it will be held on Feb 6 (10th day of Chinese New Year).

"On Feb 7, there will be the State MCA (Sabah Liaison Committee) annual Chinese New Year dinner gathering this year.

"It will be attended by our MCA President and Deputy President and the Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman and their wives."

Goh said on the same day MCA will also be having a ground-breaking ceremony for the Tunku Abdul Rahman University College Sabah branch campus at Alam Mesra.
