Sandakan: A local woman became RM2,580 poorer after falling victim to a parcel scam here. District Police Chief ACP Mohd Azhar Hamin said the incident came to light when the woman in her 30s lodged a police report on Friday.

The woman said she received a call from her younger sibling at about 11.45am on Jan 17, asking if he could borrow RM2,580 to be given to an acquaintance for a parcel delivery.

The reason was that several items such as a laptop, iPhone, gold and US$25,000 (RM111,175) sent by her sibling's acquaintance named Brian Wring from Australia who he had befriended over Facebook was put on hold at a courier company in Kuala Lumpur.

The purpose of the money is said to be courier fees from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Belud.

At about 3pm the same day, the woman went to the bank and deposited the cash into the account given by her sibling via short messaging system and WhatsApp.

The woman lodged a police report when the items failed to reach her.

Azhar said the case is being probed under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.
