Tawau: An eight-month-old girl was reportedly kidnapped by a man on Thursday, believed due to a Syabu debt.District Police Chief ACP Fadil Marsus said the baby was taken away from her house at Kg Rawa Rawa, Mile 4, Jalan Apas, at about 6.15am.

He said a 25-year-old woman, who is an aunty of the baby, noticed the toddler was missing and quickly alerted the baby's family members.

Prior to the incident, Fadil said, the victim (baby) was sleeping with her 32-year-old mother, Nor Siah Rashid, in the living room while the victim's grandmother was busy preparing 'nasi kuning' in the kitchen with the door closed but left unlocked.

"According to Nor Siah in her statement, her Indonesian husband, Fajar Baderi, had informed her that he received a WhatsApp message from a man known as Jun (suspect) who demanded him (the victim's father) to pay RM100,000 of Syabu debt," Fadil said.

The case is being investigated under Section 363 of the Penal Code for kidnapping.
