Another sinkhole in Likas
Kota Kinabalu: Another sinkhole about five feet wide and six feet deep appeared in front of SM All Saints, along Jalan Likas, at about 11pm on Wednesday.PWD Sabah Director Datuk Amrullah Kamal said the second, like the one earlier, was due to a hairline crack on the joint sewerage line beneath the road. He said a possible factor that caused the minor crack was the earthquake in Ranau that happened a year ago, saying it may have triggered movement of the soil.

"Although the Ranau earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale took place a year ago, we suspect the tremors that lasted for many months created some movement and displacement of materials that caused small and minor leakages on the joints of the sewer line.

"So, the sinkhole developed within the period before it caved in. Upon being alerted of the second sinkhole, we quickly dispatched our personnel including engineers to the site and put up barricades on the affected section to prevent untoward accidents," he told Daily Express on Thursday.

Two days ago, the first sinkhole measuring six feet wide and five feet deep occurred near Servay Likas at Mile 5, Tuaran road, causing traffic congestion on Tuesday morning. It is currently being repaired by the Public Works Department (PWD) and City Hall.

Amrullah said PWD is working closely with City Hall Engineering Department to address the defect and using a closed circuit television (CCTV) to identify other possible leakages on the sewer pipeline.

It would take a few days to repair the second sinkhole as they need to identify other possible leakages along the sewer line.

He said repairs on the first sinkhole would be completed on Friday. "The cracks would be sealed but this is a short term measure," he said, adding, "further discussions would be held to come up with a long term measure."

According to a labourer at the site of the second sinkhole, a small hole appeared a week ago but became bigger and opened up at about 11pm on Wednesday.
