Kota Kinabalu: Umno Kota Marudu said it should be given the opportunity to contest in the new Mengaris state seat in the next general election.Kota Marudu Umno Information Chief Payan Diman said the party is confident of winning Mengaris if given the chance to contest.

"We will deliver. Umno has about 22,000 members in Kota Marudu and this shows we are solid and well supported by the people although we do not hold any state or parliamentary seat in the area.

"Even though Umno does not have any seat in Kota Marudu, the party continues to serve the people and that is why our membership keeps rising. This shows the Kota Marudu people's confidence in us," he said.

Presently, there are two state seats under the Kota Marudu Parliamentary constituency, namely Matunggong and Tandek.

Matunggong has 20,005 registered voters and Tandek has 22,264 registered voters in the last election.

Payan said he is confident the Barisan Nasional leadership will seriously consider Umno's request to contest the new seat as it has more than enough support in the district.

The Kota Marudu parliamentary seat and Tandek state seat are held by Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) while Matunggong was won by Keadilan after beating the PBS candidate. Its Assemblyman Dato' Jelani Hamdan has since left Keadilan to be a BN friendly assemblyman.
