Kota Kinabalu: The Likas Bay beach was a little cleaner on Saturday, thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Customs Department's NGO groups who rolled up their sleeves and got to work during the Teluk Likas Beach Clean Up community programme. The programme was jointly organised by the Malaysian Customs Women Association (Pewakas), SM Perempuan Likas, Kota Kinabalu, Customs Workers Union (Keskes) and City Hall.

Customs Department Director Datuk Janathan Kandok said the programme aimed to create awareness among participants on the importance of conserving, protecting and preserving the nature while at the same time create younger generations who are sensitive to environmental issues. "This is especially true for beach areas, as these are places of recreation for families as well as tourists," he said.

He urged the participants to instil the feelings of love and respect towards one another and also to their environment.

The programme was actually a two-pronged event which also included a senamrobik activity, sand castle building competition among children of the department's personnel, lucky draw and many other fun activities.
