Kota Kinabalu: An Assistant Medical Officer was killed after he was run over by a Toyota Vigo while crossing Jalan Coastal near Api-Api Centre, here, Saturday. The 29-year-old Dusun based at the Kota Marudu Hospital, who is from Kg Guong in Kota Belud, succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while the 27-year-old Vigo driver escaped unscathed.

City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra said initial investigations showed the car was heading towards Donggongon in Penampang from the city centre when the 2.05am mishap took place.

The driver was said to have cut into the right lane and could not avoid crashing into the pedestrian who was crossing the road.

Inspections also found no pedestrian walk or pedestrian bridge close to where the accident occurred.

The driver is believed to have been intoxicated when the incident happened and his blood sample was taken for further investigation.

Several accidents have been reported along the stretch over the past year, among them a pedestrian who was knocked by a motorcycle police patrol unit while she was crossing the road near the Centre Point shopping complex last year.

A 28-year-old pedestrian also suffered the same fate when a car crashed into him as he was crossing the same stretch the same year.
