Sandakan: Daily Express' reporting on many issues affecting consumers in Sabah earned it the Best Consumer Print Media 2016 award at the State level Consumers Day, here, Saturday. The paper, being true to its tagline Your Local Voice, has been committed towards highlighting issues and concerns of consumers and advocating their rights.

KK FM was named the Best Consumer Electronic Media.

Other award recipients for various categories include SM Lok Yuk Kota Kinabalu, Institut Latihan Perindustrian Sandakan, Giant Sandakan and individuals namely Nordin Thani, Datuk Aminah Ambrose and James Bagah.

The event was organised by the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Sabah with support from the Sandakan Municipal Council, and officiated by State Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad.

Speaking to reporters, Jainab advised traders to organise items and products which are without Goods and Services Tax (GST) properly in their premises to avoid causing confusion among customers. She said this should be the practice in all shops, especially in big supermarkets.

"We just want to avoid consumers getting confused which items and products are imposed with GST and which ones are not," she said.

She urged all supermarkets, including Giant, to take in more local products as a way of supporting local enterprises.

On the rising price of goods in the market, the Minister said she had been receiving complaints from consumers but suggested that there might be other factors that have caused it.

"We must broaden our mind because there are other factors that have contributed to the rising cost of living of the people," she said.

She pointed out that according to research most consumers are tied to loans, especially for a house and car.

But she assured that the Government will always find ways to reduce their cost of living in the form of assistance and facilities. She said the Government's focus is on the low and middle income consumers.

In the meantime, she advised consumers to spend wisely while at the same time exercise their right to boycott or file a report against traders who do not comply with regulations.
