Tuaran: The State Government through the Local Government and Housing Ministry has been urged to direct local authorities (PBTs) such as municipal and district council to provide or improve facilities for the disabled or handicapped (OKU), including the blind, in towns and housing estates. The President of the Society for the Blind in Malaysia (SBM), Nazari Othman, made the call at the closing of a two-day State-level Workshop on Accessibility Auditing for the Blind 2016, here, Saturday.

He said using Tuaran as a model for the workshop, it was found that facilities for the OKU especially the blind was very little, if any.

"Similarly, in public housing where the blind stay such as in PPR Sri Rugading and Telipok Ria, facilities for the blind is almost nil. We don't want them to fall into the drain, for instance," he added.

He, therefore, urged the Tuaran District Council to do something about the matter.

The workshop was closed by Assistant Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam on behalf of Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

Also present was the Chairman of the SBM Sabah Chapter, Puan Mery Ringegon @ Catherine, who later handed over the findings and recommendations to Dr Joachim who said he will brief his Minister about the matter.

Meanwhile, Hajiji, in his speech read by Dr Joachim, urged parents with OKU kids, including the visually challenged, to register with the Social Welfare Department so that aid can be rendered.

"According to the OKU Information Management System, up to June 2016, there are 388,566 OKUs registered," he added.

Also present was the President of the Sabah Society for the Blind, Datuk Rosalind Chew.
