SESB acquires 14 back-up generator sets

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) expects to cut downtime from power outages significantly after the utility company procured 14 new mobile generator sets on trucks as back-up in case of power interruptions."This is another milestone for SESB in our effort to improve security of supply and customer experience," declared its Senior General Manager (Asset Management) Muhamad Nazri Pazil after a handing over of mock key ceremony from supplier WZS PowerGen Sdn Bhd to SESB here, Tuesday.Also present were SESB General Manager (Generation) Abdul Razak Salleh, Deputy General Manager (Distribution) Ridwan Saham and Chief Engineer (Generation Technical Support Department) Amir Palingei.

Currently, Nazri said, only seven out of the 14 trucks are in Kota Kinabalu with the rest are expected to arrive by mid-October. The trucks cost the company around RM12m and will replace 25 canopy generator sets which were retired last year.Following the acquisition, he said SESB had set up a mobile unit whose role is to join SESB's contractors in troubleshooting power interruptions and give faster relief to customers.Each of the truck can generate up to 500kW of electricity, and could easily supply temporary power to 300 households at any one time."In terms of commercial use, for example, it can power up the Damai commercial lot with only one truck," he said.

Presently, all the trucks will be based in Kota Kinabalu but will later be distributed to Sandakan, Tawau and Labuan as well."This brings our total generator sets to 23 while our contractors have an additional 24 sets. Nine of these generator sets can produce up to 1 MW of electricity but those will be used to serve bigger customers while the 500kW sets will be used for normal consumers in housing areas," he said.

The generator sets will also give priority of service to critical areas such as hospitals and airports as well as venues of official government functions.Nazri also assured that although the new generator sets have lower capacity in terms of power generation compared to the old decommissioned 25 canopy generator sets, the new sets are much better in terms of functionality.Each of the 25 canopy generator sets have generation capacity between 800kW and 1,400kW.Meanwhile, WZS PowerGen Sdn Bhd Chief Technical Officer Marizan Nor Basirun thanked SESB for its technical support and cooperation extended to the WZS team to realise the project."Without their commitment in this project, all these would not have been possible," he said.He added that the trucks supplied to SESB use one of the most advanced engines in the market today – the Euro 3 engine.
