British woman injured on Mt Kinabalu rescued

Ranau: A 37-year-old British woman had to be rescued from Mount Kinabalu after she sprained her foot during her descent from the mountain here on Wednesday. Jane Gillian, who was believed to have slipped and fallen at Km 7.2, was brought to safety by the Search and Rescue Team at about 7.30am. Ranau Fire and Rescue Department Chief Jimmy Lagung confirmed the incident and believed Gillian may have been separated from her group during descent. ADVERTISEMENT "The climbers climbed Mount Kinabalu on Tuesday and reached the summit around midnight the same day. She was one of the 13 people in her group. "After successfully climbing to the top, she was separated from her group while they made their way down. We understand that at some point during the descent, the victim slipped and fell," he explained.ADVERTISEMENT This is the fifth incident reported this year with the previous one taking place on July 25 involving two Danish sisters, Christina Hanson, 25, and Pernille Hanson, 22. According to Lagung, the victim was lucky because shortly after the incident three mountain guides spotted her and contacted the search and rescue personnel.

"Fortunately, the incident also occurred just about 50 metres from the Sayat-Sayat Checkpoint where our Mosar personnel are always on standby to address any incidents of this kind."Members of the Mosar rushed to the scene and found the victim crying in pain, saying her left foot had sprained."The rescuers, along with a Kinabalu Park officer, treated the victim by wrapping her injured ankle before carrying her down to Laban Rata using a 'Junkin Stretcher' technique and creating a human anchor."Slowly they lowered the 12mm rope borrowed from the Mountain Torque Agency in the area to manoeuver the steep Red Zone," said Lagung.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

According to him, the victim was given the service of a Sabah Air helicopter which landed in Laban Rata as the Mosar team assisted by several Kinabalu Park Officer carried the victim there at about 10.15am.The victim was flown directly to Kota Kinabalu where an ambulance waited in Bukit Layang-Layang before being rushed to the Gleneagles Hospital Kota Kinabalu for further treatment.
