Culture of slander
Kota Belud: The culture of slandering one another is getting more rampant among Malaysians nowadays, leaving bad perceptions towards the nation's leaders.Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said, however, while it is a sad reality, the leaders who fall victims to such attacks can take heart from the fact that in the end, truth will always triumph.

"Furthermore, our religion has taught us that when we fall victims to slander and all kinds of accusations and insults, we will benefit because God will not allow us to be victimised unjustly without proper retribution," he said at the Hari Raya Open House of Parliament Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia, here, Saturday.

Zahid was alluding to the barrage of criticisms and allegations levelled against government leaders, particularly Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak over alleged misappropriation of the country's investment arm 1Malaysia Development Berhad's (1MDB) funds from members of the opposition as well as former Umno members such as former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad.

Two days ago, the US Department of Justice announced that it had filed civil lawsuits to seize assets worth over a billion dollars allegedly stolen from 1MDB, the largest sets of cases brought to court under the DOJ's Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative. The DoJ had said that the people of Malaysia had been defrauded on a massive scale through 1MDB.

Zahid said currently, social media had helped propel the popularity of sleazy statements over facts, making falsehood sound truthful.

"But those who defamed others, let it be known that God will not forgive them unless they received forgiveness from those they have defamed. It is better to be vilified than be the one who vilify others," he said.

Meanwhile, in his speech, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said the State Government will continue to give its full support and commitment to the Federal Government's effort to combat terrorism threats in the country.

"We are confident that the steps taken by the Government under the leadership of our Prime Minister through his 'wasatiyyah' concept, is the best approach in neutralising this threat and at the same time, create a peaceful and harmonious society," he said.

Musa added the State Government believed that any problem can be overcome as long as the people remain united and stand behind the government.

"The State Government and Sabahans also will continue to stand firm behind our Prime Minister, giving him our undivided support as he works to continue his development agenda and national transformation programme for the sake of our people," he said, at the event attended by about 30,000 people from Kota Belud and nearby districts.

Musa said he is happy to see the multiracial and multi-religious Sabahans who attended the event able to mingle freely with one another without prejudice towards one another's culture.

"The spirit of unity, harmony and togetherness among the people in the State has long been our practise, culture and tradition and this attitude had been the catalyst to our development and progress," he said.
