S'wak men expected to beat Sabah in volleyball

Sibu: Sarawak's volleyball (men's) team is expected to conclude the early competition in Group B comfortably in the 18th Malaysia Games (Sukma) despite losing 2-3 to Penang.Sarawak will face neighbouring state, Sabah who beat Terengganu 3-2 but lost 0-3 to Penang and Johor.

Sarawak, who earlier beat Terengganu 3-0, today beat Johor 3-0, with the score 25-19 in the first set, 25-20 and 25-17 in the second and third sets.

Sarawak coach Philip Teo Chip Boon who was asked to comment on the victory achieved by his wards, said he was satisfied with their performance despite suffering food poisoning Friday night.

"Several of the players suffered from diarrhoea but thankfully they recovered before the match," he said.

Meanwhile, in SIBU, the men's and women's gold medals in badminton will be contested by Selangor and Penang at the Sibu Indoor Stadium today (Saturday).

The men's third placing will be a battle between Melaka and Kedah while the third place playoff for bronze in the women's competition will see a contest between Federal Territories and Perak. In the men's semifinals Saturday, Selangor whipped Melaka 3-0 while the women edged Federal Territories 3-2.

The other semifinals in the men's competition saw Penang beat Kedah 3-1 and the women's squad beat Perak 3-1.
