Ranau: Junidey Aman learned a bitter lesson last week after his home was razed to the ground, admitting that it was all his fault."That night I decided to boil water using a cooking pot, instead of a kettle. But it was almost midnight and I was very tired, so I fell asleep. When I woke up, the fire was already raging at the kitchen," he recalled. The administrative assistant at the district Water Department said he immediately ran and switched off the stove and tried to put off the fire himself.

At the time, his wife and five children were already sleeping.

"The dangerous thing about the fire is, once it had spread up to the walls, it immediately went up to the ceiling.

I realised it was futile to try and put it out especially when I started to feel my back was beginning to burn.

"So I ushered my family out of the house immediately. We didn't manage to save anything except the clothes on our back," he said when met at his relative's house here, Thursday.

Junidey and his wife, Salimeh Sarinin, were on hand to accept contributions from members of the Block Lok Kawi AIM Entrepreneurs Club delegation led by its chairperson Agnes Totu and Kundasang Entrepreneurs Club led by its chairperson Salinah Madisah.

The clubs contributed various items including food, clothing, groceries and cash for the family.

"I am very thankful to the clubs for their concern. I am deeply touched by the outpouring of support not only from NGOs like these clubs, but also the Ranau people who have been very sympathetic to my family.

"We have received so much help and contributions over the past one week since the tragedy and I would like to thank them all," he said.

Currently, Junidey and his family are living in his in-law's house, about 15 minutes' drive from their old home.
