Kota Kinabalu: Education Director Maimunah Suhaibul on Thursday said the remaining placements for Sabahan teachers in schools across the State will be finalised this July 25. She said 377 new teachers will be receiving their appointment letters next week, including an additional 49 appointments.

A total of 248 out of the 625 Sabahan graduates of Institutes of Teacher Education (IPGM) had already been offered teaching positions on June 16. She said the number has now risen from 576 previously.

"With these placements, we will solve the issue of placement of college graduate teachers and shortage of teachers in the State," she said when met at the department's Hari Raya open house here.

Also present at the event were Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun and some 1,000 guests.

According to Maimunah, the Education Ministry recently held a large-scale special teachers' posting that saw 300 teachers from Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak being posted elsewhere.

She pointed out the placement of Sabahan teachers in the State was in line with the recommendations of the Government that 90 per cent of teachers in Sabah and Sarawak be locals.

In another development, Maimunah said the Education Ministry had also given its nod to the department to hire 576 new interim teachers to work in secondary schools.

"We have conducted the interviews on July 19 and 20 and the interim positions will only be offered to those who pass the interview and hold a degree in Education.

"They were many we could not hire due to the lack of this qualification," said Maimunah, adding that the positions are also only offered to Sabahans.

However, she said State needs approximately 581 interim teachers, higher than the ministry's approved number, adding, however, the department will continue to get more to ensure the number of teachers is sufficient later.

Maimunah said most of the schools which are short of teachers are in the East Coast districts like in Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu, Pitas as well as Kudat, and revealed the critical subjects requiring teachers badly are English and Islamic Studies.

"We would also want to advise those who had been offered with positions to be prepared to be posted to the rural areas as this is where many teachers are needed," she said.
