Wooing Tawau converts to join

Tawau: Tawau Mualaf Association (PMT) will be tracking more converts to Islam in the district to join the association in order to strengthen the association as well as to deepen their religious knowledge.Its Chairman Ahaning Abau @ Abdul Malik Abdullah said so far the association has 525 registered members and the number could easily reach 1,000 if all converts registered with Sabah Islamic Affairs Department (Jheains) Tawau also register as members.

"We intend to find them but due to financial factors, we have not been able to do so. We hope that once our financial stand improves, PMT will go to the villages and find those who have registered with Jheains," he said.

Abdul Malik said this when met after PMT breaking of fast event at a restaurant here, Monday.

Also present were Tawau District Chief OKK Kee Mohd Ayub Kee Abu Bakar, PBS Tanjung Batu Division Chief Samson Gapid and PMT Vice Chairman Abdul Chok Abdullah.

Ahaning said the association is relying on contributions from local political leaders and local community leaders to conduct activities and hoped that the government will help them financially, especially in tracking converts to Islam.

"We want to play a bigger role as an association in helping members and potential members towards deepening our Islamic knowledge, while at the same time get to know each other during various activities," he said.

The association, he said, organises Islamic classes in Masjid Al-Khautar every weekend but many members could not attend the classes because they could not afford the transportation fee.

He added although faced with financial constraint, the association with the collaboration of Jheains officers is determined to invite members from villages and so far, they have managed to get more than 100 members attending the classes, compared to only around 40 previously.
