Kota Kinabalu: The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Sandakan is seeking justice for a poor dog who was cruelly abandoned and dumped by its heartless owner but was saved in the nick of time. Some callous cold-hearted owner had put the dog into a gunny sack and tied it up before leaving it in a big dumpster.

Apparently, the garbage collector unknowingly picked up the "garbage" and placed it in a garbage truck.

President of Funding for Animals & Independent Rescues (FAIR), Shirley Khong highlighted the case to Daily Express in a statement, issued on Wednesday.

"This poor dog has such sad eyes and is so fearful and scared. Whoever did this needs to be brought to justice.

With the new Animal Welfare Bill being enforced now, this act of cruelty is punishable by law.

"We hope to find justice for this dog whose owner had no compunction about mistreating the animal and trying to get rid of it without a care for its well-being. Please help us find justice for this dog," she appealed.

Anyone knowing the identity of the owner of this dog may ring the SPCA Sandakan Hotline at 010-227 8911.

All calls will be anonymous and identities will not be revealed.

According to Khong, last Sunday, an SPCA member, identified as Gin, was driving behind a garbage truck that had stopped at the traffic lights at Mile 4 in Sandakan.

"When she looked up, she noticed a wriggling gunny sack. She suspected that something was amiss, so she trailed the truck to Mile 8 before ringing the police.

The police were so wonderful and efficient. They immediately rang the waste management company which then asked its men to remove the gunny sack from the vehicle.

"As soon as they took it out, they could all hear the sound of barking and whining. Going by its movement, they could see the dog struggling to get out of the sack with its tiny brown nose sticking out of the bag," she related.

Khong contended that had Gin not seen the wriggling bag, this dog would have been dumped amongst the pile of rubbish and left to die mercilessly or been attacked and killed by stray dogs in the area.
